What are the correct Timing and points settings for a VW Beetle?

Ignition timing

* Static timing should be set at 20 degrees BTDC (Before Top Dead Center). This is measured with a timing light, with the engine running at idle.

* Dynamic timing should be set so that the timing marks on the flywheel are aligned with the pointer located in the inspection hole in the bell housing. This is measured with a timing light, with the engine running at approximately 3000 RPM.

Points

* The point gap should be set to 0.016 - 0.020 inches. This is measured with a feeler gauge, between the contact points of the distributor.

* The condenser should be replaced at the same time as the points.
