How do you sell a car if signed the title?

If you have signed the title over to a buyer, the car is no longer yours to sell. The new buyer is now the legal owner of the vehicle and must sign the title over to any subsequent buyer. To complete the sale of the car, you will need to:

Notify the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) of the sale. The DMV will need a completed Statement of Transfer and Release of Liability (Form REG 262) from you and the buyer.

Give the buyer the keys, registration, and any other relevant documents related to the vehicle.

If you have a lien on the vehicle, you will need to contact your lienholder and satisfy the lien before the buyer can take ownership of the vehicle.
