2. Contact the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). You will need to visit the DMV in person or mail them the following documents:
* The death certificate
* The vehicle title
* The vehicle registration
* Your driver's license
3. Pay any outstanding fees. The DMV may charge a fee to transfer the title of the vehicle into your name.
4. Receive the new title. The DMV will issue you a new title that shows you as the owner of the vehicle.
Here are some additional tips:
* If the vehicle is registered in a state other than where the person died, you may need to contact the DMV in both states.
* If the person had a loan on the vehicle, you may need to contact the lender to get the title released.
* If the vehicle is owned by more than one person, you may need to get the consent of the other owners before you can transfer the title.
