Parts:
1. Brake drum
2. Wheel cylinder
3. Brake shoes
4. Return springs
5. Hold-down springs
6. Adjuster screw
7. Dust cover
8. Backing plate
9. Axle shaft
Operation:
When you press the brake pedal, the master cylinder sends brake fluid to the wheel cylinders. The wheel cylinders push the brake shoes against the brake drum, which slows down the vehicle. The return springs pull the brake shoes back when you release the brake pedal.
Maintenance:
It is important to inspect your brake drums and shoes regularly for wear. The brake shoes should be replaced when they are worn down to 1/8 of an inch (3 mm). The brake drums should be replaced if they are scored or cracked.
Adjustment:
The brake shoes need to be adjusted periodically to ensure that they are making proper contact with the brake drum. To adjust the brake shoes, turn the adjuster screw until the brake shoes are just touching the brake drum. Then, back off the adjuster screw 1/4 of a turn.
Troubleshooting:
If your brakes are not working properly, there are a few things you can check:
* Check the brake fluid level.
* Check the brake lines for leaks.
* Check the brake shoes for wear.
* Check the brake drums for scoring or cracking.
* Check the adjuster screw to make sure that it is properly adjusted.
If you are still having problems with your brakes, you should take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic.
