Instructions
Open the hood of the car and locate the battery. It will be in a black plastic box and will have two posts, a positive and a negative. Use a wrench to loosen the negative post and disconnect the cable.
Note: Wait 10 minutes for the car's electrical system to power down completely before proceeding.
The instrument cluster trim is the black plastic piece around the instrument cluster. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the two screws at the top of the trim and then use a pry bar to pry it off.
The instrument cluster bezel is the metal piece around the instrument cluster. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the four screws that hold the bezel in place and then use a pry bar to pry it off.
There are two connectors on the back of the instrument cluster, a white one and a black one. Disconnect both of these connectors.
There are four screws that hold the instrument cluster in place, two at the top and two at the bottom. Use a Torx screwdriver to remove these four screws and then carefully lift the instrument cluster out of the car.
Gently lower the new instrument cluster into the car and then replace the four screws that hold it in place. Be careful not to overtighten the screws, as this can damage the threads.
Reconnect the two connectors on the back of the instrument cluster, the white one and the black one.
Replace the instrument cluster bezel and secure it with the four Phillips-head screws.
Replace the instrument cluster trim and secure it with the two Phillips-head screws.
Reconnect the negative battery cable to the negative post on the battery and tighten it with a wrench. Test the instrument cluster to make sure that it is working properly.
Note: There are no screws for a 2001 Volkswagen model. It is all snap together components to remove.
