- Feeler gauge
- 13 mm wrench
- 10 mm socket wrench
- 5 mm Allen key
Step 1: Prepare the Engine
- Let the engine cool down before starting any work.
- Remove the fuel tank and air filter housing to access the cylinder head.
- Locate the valve cover and remove the bolts holding it in place.
Step 2: Measure Valve Clearances
- Insert the feeler gauge between the valve stem and the rocker arm for each valve.
- The correct clearance should be between 0.05 to 0.1 mm (0.002 to 0.004 inches) for the intake valves and 0.1 to 0.15 mm (0.004 to 0.006 inches) for the exhaust valves.
- If the clearance is incorrect, it needs to be adjusted.
Step 3: Adjust Valve Clearances (If Needed)
- Use the 13 mm wrench to loosen the locknut on the valve adjuster.
- Turn the adjuster screw clockwise to decrease the clearance or counterclockwise to increase it.
- While holding the adjuster screw in position, tighten the locknut back in place.
- Re-check the clearance to ensure it is within the specified range.
Step 4: Reassemble the Engine
- Replace the valve cover and tighten the bolts.
- Reinstall the fuel tank and air filter housing.
Step 5: Check Engine Operation
- Start the engine and check for any unusual noises or vibrations.
Remember, adjusting valve gaps requires precision, so if you're unsure of any step, it's best to consult a qualified mechanic or refer to the BMW k75s service manual.
