Tools and Supplies Needed:
- New oil filter (Harley-Davidson part number 63731-00)
- New oil (Harley-Davidson recommends Syn3 20W-50 Synthetic Blend Motor Oil)
- Oil drain pan
- Funnel
- Wrench
- Rags
- Gloves
Step-by-Step Procedure:
1. Warm up the engine. This will help to thin the oil and make it easier to drain.
2. Turn off the engine and remove the oil fill plug.
3. Place the oil drain pan under the oil drain plug.
4. Remove the oil drain plug and allow the oil to drain completely.
5. Once the oil has drained completely, reinstall the oil drain plug.
6. Locate the oil filter.
7. Use the wrench to loosen the oil filter.
8. Remove the oil filter and discard it.
9. Apply a thin coat of new oil to the gasket of the new oil filter.
10. Screw the new oil filter onto the oil filter mount until snug.
11. Replace the oil fill plug.
12. Add the new oil to the engine through the oil fill plug.
13. Check the oil level. The oil level should be between the "Add" and "Full" marks on the oil dipstick.
14. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. This will help to circulate the new oil throughout the engine.
15. Turn off the engine and check for leaks. If there are no leaks, the oil change is complete.
Tips:
- If you are unable to remove the oil drain plug with a wrench, you may need to use a hammer and chisel.
- If you are unable to remove the oil filter with a wrench, you may need to use an oil filter wrench.
- Be sure to dispose of the old oil and filter in a safe and environmentally friendly manner.
- It is important to check the oil level regularly and add oil as needed to keep the engine properly lubricated.
