Method 1: Odometer Button Method (Most Common)
1. Turn the ignition to the "ON" position (but don't start the engine).
2. Locate the odometer button. This is usually a small button on the instrument cluster, often near the trip odometer reset button. It might be labelled "TRIP" or have a similar marking.
3. Press and hold the odometer button. You may need to hold it for several seconds, or repeatedly press it while observing the odometer.
4. Observe the display. You should see the maintenance light start to flash or the mileage/time reset. If it's odometer-based, you might see the maintenance interval reset to the factory default. If it's a time/distance based system, it may simply go off after a certain amount of time or mileage.
5. Release the button. The maintenance light should now be off.
Method 2: Combination of Steps
Some 2004 RAV4s may require a combination of steps. Try these if Method 1 doesn't work:
1. Turn the ignition to "ON."
2. Press and hold the odometer button.
3. While holding the odometer button, cycle the ignition on and off quickly (several times). This is less common but some Toyotas use this method.
4. Release the button and check the maintenance light.
If Neither Method Works:
* Consult your owner's manual: The most reliable information is in your vehicle's owner's manual. It will have the precise instructions specific to your RAV4 model.
* Toyota Dealership: If you're still having trouble, a Toyota dealership can reset the light for you.
Important Note: Resetting the maintenance light doesn't actually perform any maintenance. It simply acknowledges that you've performed the necessary maintenance tasks. Make sure you actually *have* performed the recommended maintenance before resetting the light. Ignoring required maintenance can lead to serious mechanical issues.
