Steps (Generally Applicable):
1. Turn off the ignition and park the vehicle on a level surface. Engage the parking brake.
2. Locate the wiper arm. This is the metal arm connected to the wiper blade.
3. Lift the wiper arm away from the windshield. You may need to gently pry it up using your fingers or a small flat-head screwdriver (be careful not to scratch the paint). Some arms have a tab or release mechanism you need to push or slide to free the arm. You may need to overcome some spring tension. Be careful not to force it, as you could damage the wiper arm mechanism.
4. Locate the connection between the wiper arm and the wiper blade. This is usually a hook, a push button, or a clip.
* Hook type: There's usually a metal hook holding the blade to the arm. Gently push the hook outward or lift it up to release the blade. The blade should then simply slide off the arm.
* Push-button type: Look for a small button or tab on the connection point. Press the button and the blade should come off.
* Other types: If it's neither a hook nor a push-button, refer to the instructions that came with your new wiper blades. Sometimes there is a small clip or lever to release the wiper blade.
5. Compare the new wiper blade to the old one. Make sure it's the correct size and type.
6. Install the new wiper blade. Reverse the removal process. Ensure the blade is securely attached to the arm. Listen for a satisfying "click" to indicate proper attachment.
7. Lower the wiper arm. Make sure it rests properly against the windshield.
8. Repeat steps 3-7 for the other wiper blade.
9. Test your wipers. Turn on your wipers to ensure they operate correctly and don't leave streaks or skip.
Important Considerations:
* Wiper Blade Size: Before buying new wiper blades, check your owner's manual or the sticker on the driver's side door jamb for the correct size. This will ensure a proper fit. Failing to do so can lead to poor performance and even damage to the wiper mechanism.
* Wiper Blade Type: As mentioned above, there are different types of wiper blade connections. Make sure you buy replacement blades compatible with your vehicle.
* Force: Avoid using excessive force at any stage of the process. If you're struggling, consult a professional or your owner's manual.
If you're still unsure or uncomfortable performing this task yourself, it's always best to take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic or auto parts store for assistance. They can install the wipers quickly and accurately.
