Method 1: Pulling Straight Up (Most Common)
This is the simplest method and works for most S10s.
1. Shift into Park (Automatic) or Neutral (Manual). This is crucial for safety and to ensure the shift lever is free to move.
2. Grip the knob firmly. Sometimes a firm grip is all you need.
3. Pull straight up. Apply steady, even pressure. It might take a bit of force, but avoid yanking or twisting. If it doesn't budge easily, proceed to Method 2.
Method 2: Using a Shift Knob Puller (If Method 1 Fails)
If pulling straight up doesn't work, the knob might be stuck due to thread locker or age. A shift knob puller is a small tool specifically designed for this purpose.
1. Acquire a shift knob puller. These are inexpensive and available at most auto parts stores.
2. Attach the puller according to its instructions. Generally, you'll fit the jaws of the puller around the base of the knob.
3. Tighten the puller according to the instructions. This will grip the knob firmly.
4. Slowly and steadily turn the puller. This will pull the knob off the shifter.
Important Considerations:
* Force: Use firm, consistent pressure but avoid excessive force that could damage the shifter.
* Threadlocker: If the knob is extremely difficult to remove, there might be threadlocker (a type of adhesive) on the threads. A little penetrating oil (like PB Blaster) applied around the base of the knob, letting it sit for a few minutes, can help loosen it. However, be mindful of any paint or interior finishes.
* Wear and Tear: Older vehicles may have worn shift levers or knobs, making removal more difficult.
* Aftermarket Knobs: Aftermarket shift knobs might have different removal methods (sometimes requiring special tools or techniques). Consult the instructions that came with the aftermarket knob if applicable.
If you've tried both methods and still can't remove the knob, it's best to seek assistance from a mechanic to avoid damage.
