* Oil pressure issues: A failing timing chain can damage the oil pump, resulting in low oil pressure.
After Complete Failure (This is usually the end):
* Complete engine failure: The engine will seize up completely. It will stop running and likely won't restart. You'll probably hear a loud bang or grinding noise at the point of failure.
* Bent valves: The most significant consequence. With the timing off, valves can collide with pistons, causing significant damage. Repairing bent valves is expensive, often as expensive or more than engine replacement.
Important Note: Because a broken timing chain usually leads to immediate and severe engine damage, the subtle signs above might be missed. Regular maintenance and attention to unusual sounds are crucial.
What NOT to do if you suspect a broken timing chain:
* Don't try to start the engine: Attempting to start a vehicle with a broken timing chain will almost certainly cause irreversible damage.
If you suspect a problem with your timing chain, have the vehicle towed to a qualified mechanic for diagnosis and repair. It's not something you can safely diagnose or repair yourself without specialized tools and knowledge. Ignoring a potential timing chain issue will likely lead to a much more costly repair, or even a complete engine replacement.
