* Reset the PCM (Powertrain Control Module): This is the closest equivalent to resetting a computer. The PCM controls the engine and transmission. You typically reset it by disconnecting the negative (-) battery terminal for about 15-30 minutes. This clears any stored trouble codes and resets the adaptive learning. Reconnect the battery afterward. Caution: This will erase the radio presets.
* Clear trouble codes: If you're dealing with a check engine light, you need to clear the codes. You can do this by disconnecting the battery (as above), or using a code reader (OBD-I scanner specific to your car's year).
Important Note: The 1995 Cavalier Z24 uses an OBD-I system, which is different from the OBD-II system used in later vehicles. You'll need an OBD-I code reader if you want to diagnose specific trouble codes. A standard OBD-II scanner won't work.
If you have a specific problem you're trying to solve, describing the issue will help in suggesting the appropriate solution. Simply resetting the PCM might not fix every problem.
