Before you begin:
* Gather your new wiper blade. Make sure it's the correct size for your 2001 Mercury Sable. You can find this information in your owner's manual or online by searching "[Your car's year, make, and model] rear wiper blade size."
* Park your vehicle on a level surface and turn off the engine. Engage the parking brake.
Steps for both hook and push-button types:
1. Lift the wiper arm away from the windshield. Gently lift the arm away from the glass. You might need to slightly pull it away from the windshield to get it to release.
Hook-type arm (most common):
2. Locate the hook. Look closely at where the wiper blade connects to the arm. You'll see a metal hook or a tab holding the blade in place.
3. Push the hook or tab. Using your fingers or a small flat-head screwdriver (carefully!), push the hook or tab to release the old wiper blade. Sometimes it helps to gently pull on the blade simultaneously.
4. Remove the old wiper blade. Once the hook is released, the old blade should slide off.
5. Install the new wiper blade. Align the new blade with the hook and firmly push it onto the arm until it clicks or snaps into place.
6. Lower the wiper arm. Carefully lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield.
Push-button/clip-type arm (less common):
2. Locate the release button or clip. Look for a button or a small clip on the wiper arm connector.
3. Press the button or release the clip. Press the button, or carefully use a small flat-head screwdriver (very carefully!) to pry open the clip.
4. Remove the old wiper blade. Once the button is pressed or the clip is released, the old blade should come off.
5. Install the new wiper blade. Slide the new blade onto the arm connector until it's securely in place.
6. Lower the wiper arm. Carefully lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield.
Important Considerations:
* Be gentle: Avoid applying excessive force, as you could damage the wiper arm or the blade.
* Inspect the arm: Check the wiper arm for any signs of damage or wear.
* Test the wiper: After installing the new blade, test the rear wiper to ensure it's working correctly.
If you're unsure about any part of this process, it's always best to consult your owner's manual or take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic. Pictures of your wiper arm connection would help determine the exact type and provide more specific instructions.
