To release the parking brake:
1. Make sure the car is in neutral (or park, if it has a column-mounted shifter). This is crucial to prevent the car from rolling.
2. Locate the parking brake lever. It's usually a vertical lever.
3. Push down firmly on the lever. There might be some resistance, especially if the brake has been applied firmly. You might need to apply some force. Some models have a button or ratchet mechanism that may need to be pressed or released while simultaneously pulling the lever up.
4. Lift the lever. Once you've overcome the initial resistance, lift the lever upward to its fully released position.
If it's stuck:
* Try rocking the car gently back and forth. This can sometimes help dislodge the brake shoes.
* Check for obstructions. Make sure nothing is interfering with the lever's movement.
* If you still can't release the brake, you may have a problem with the parking brake mechanism itself. This would require inspection and possible repair by a mechanic. Don't force it as you risk damaging the mechanism.
Remember safety first. Be sure the car is on a level surface, and have someone help you if you're having trouble. If you're not mechanically inclined, it's always best to seek assistance from a qualified mechanic.
