What does the anti-lock braking system do?

The anti-lock brakes allow you to safely stop your motor vehicle when conditions are less than ideal, like when you’re driving on slick roads or you must stop quickly to protect yourself from an accident. As its name appropriately implies, the ABS prevents the wheels on your car or truck from locking up so you don’t skid uncontrollably.

How do the anti-lock brakes work?

The anti-lock brakes keep the tires from skidding whenever you decelerate quickly or abruptly. Once the ABS becomes engaged, you not only stop faster, you’re able to steer while you stop. So how does the ABS know when a wheel is about to lock up? Your vehicle’s ABS has 4 main components – the speed sensors, valves, pump and controller. The controller is constantly measuring the speed sensors to identify unordinary or rapid decelerations, like when you have to slam on your brakes. When this happens, the controller reduces the hydraulic pressure to the brakes. This adjustment in hydraulic pressure gives the tires the ability to decelerate at the same rate as your car or truck, keeping you front losing control while stopping. What causes the ABS Warning Light to come on?
