1. Gather the Necessary Tools and Materials:
- Spark plug wrench or ratchet with extension
- Spark plug socket
- New spark plugs (check your owner’s manual for the correct spark plug type)
- Spark plug gap gauge (optional)
- Pliers
- A clean rag or compressed air for cleaning
2. Safety Precautions:
- Make sure the engine is cool and turned off.
- Disconnect the battery to prevent any accidental sparks.
3. Remove the Spark Plug Covers:
- Open the hood and locate the spark plug covers on the engine.
- Use a plier or a flathead screwdriver to remove the covers.
4. Locate the Spark Plugs:
- The spark plugs are located directly beneath the spark plug covers.
- There will be eight spark plugs in your Expedition, one for each cylinder.
5. Remove the Old Spark Plugs:
- Carefully use the spark plug wrench or socket to loosen and remove the old spark plugs.
- Be careful not to drop the spark plugs into the engine.
- If the spark plugs are stuck, you may need to use a bit of force, be gentle, but steady.
6. Check the Old Spark Plugs:
- Inspect the old spark plugs for signs of wear, such as erosion or fouling.
- This can give you insights into the condition of your engine.
7. Check the Gap of the New Spark Plugs (optional):
- Use a spark plug gap gauge to check the electrode gap of the new spark plugs.
- Adjust the gap if needed to match the specification for your vehicle.
- Refer to the owner's manual or spark plug packaging for the correct gap.
8. Thread the New Spark Plugs In:
- Hand-tighten the new spark plugs into their respective holes until they are snug.
- Be careful not to over-tighten them, as this can damage the threads.
- Use the wrench or ratchet to tighten the spark plugs an additional 1/2 to 1 full turn.
9. Reinstall the Spark Plug Covers:
- Once all the new spark plugs are installed, replace the spark plug covers.
- Make sure they lock in place securely.
10. Reconnect Battery
- Reconnect the battery if you disconnected it earlier.
11. Start the Vehicle:
- Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes to test the new spark plugs.
- Listen for any unusual noises or check for any warning lights on the dashboard.
