How do i Replace front differential seal 1999 Subaru Forester?

Step 1: Prepare the vehicle.

>• Park the vehicle on a level surface and turn off the engine.

• Allow the engine to cool down completely.

• Engage the parking brake.

• Chock the rear wheels.

>• Safely raise the front of the vehicle so that you have enough room to work underneath.

>• Place a drain pan under the differential to catch any fluid that may leak out.

Step 2: Remove the propeller shaft.

>• Remove the prop shaft nuts, usually 24 mm.

>• Mark the driveshaft in alignment with a permanent marker in relation to the companion flange.

>• Using a large prybar or a pry bar and hammer rotate companion flange clockwise to create space between the output shaft spline and the pinion flange splines.

• Separate Propeller shaft from the differential.

• Slide Propeller shaft out of transmission output housing.

Step 3: Remove the oil pan.

>• Remove the bolts that secure the oil pan to the differential.

>• Carefully remove the oil pan, paying attention not to drop any of the bolts into the differential.

Step 4: Remove the old seal.

>• Use a seal puller to remove the old seal from the differential housing.

>• Be careful not to damage the differential housing.

Step 5: Install the new seal.

>• Apply a thin coat of RTV silicone sealant to the new seal.

>• Carefully install the new seal into the differential housing, using a seal installer.

>• Make sure that the seal is seated properly.

Step 6: Reinstall the oil pan.

>• Reinstall the oil pan and secure it with the bolts that were removed in Step 3.

>• Tighten the bolts snugly.

Step 6: Reattach the driveshaft

>• Insert driveshaft into the transmission’s output housing.

>• Rotate the companion flange until the alignment marks created earlier line up.

>• Insert the driveshaft into the differential.

>• Install 24mm driveshaft bolts and loosely tighten.

>• While rotating the driveshaft, tighten the driveshaft bolts

tightening specs: 51 ft-LBs (70 Nm)

Step 7: Refill the differential with oil.

>• Use a funnel to add GL-5 80W-90 gear oil to the differential, until it reaches the “Full” mark on the dipstick.

>• Replace the dipstick.

Step 8: Test drive the vehicle.

>• Carefully lower the vehicle to the ground.

>• Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.

>• Check for any leaks.

>• If there are no leaks, take the vehicle for a test drive.

>• Listen for any unusual noises.

>• Make sure that the differential is functioning properly.
