If your 1987 Honda Accord LX is running rough, stalling, or experiencing poor fuel economy, it may be necessary to adjust the carburetor. Please follow the steps below to make adjustments.
Note: Before starting, you will need to ensure the engine is cold.
1. Locate the carburetor on the engine. The carburetor is usually located on the top of the engine and is connected to the intake manifold by a large rubber hose.
2. Remove the air cleaner housing to access the carburetor. The air cleaner housing is the plastic or metal cover over the carburetor. It is usually held in place by a few screws or clips.
3. Look for the idle mixture screw on the carburetor. The idle mixture screw is a small screw located on the side of the carburetor, usually near the throttle linkage.
4. Turn the idle mixture screw in or out to adjust the idle speed. Turning the screw in will lean out the mixture, while turning it out will richen the mixture.
5. Start the engine and let it warm up to operating temperature.
6. Once the engine is warmed up, use a tachometer to measure the idle speed. The ideal idle speed for a 1987 Honda Accord LX is 700-800 RPMs.
7. If the idle speed is too high, turn the idle mixture screw in to lean out the mixture. If the idle speed is too low, turn the screw out to richen the mixture.
8. Continue to adjust the idle mixture screw until the idle speed is at the correct RPMs.
9. Once the idle speed is correct, replace the air cleaner housing and check for proper function.
Note: If you are unable to adjust the carburetor correctly, it is recommended that you take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic for further assistance.
