1. Tools and Equipment:
Ensure you have the necessary tools and equipment, including:
• A vehicle safety stand
• A jack and jack stands
• A socket wrench set
• A breaker bar
• A torque wrench
• A caliper compression tool
• Replacement brake discs
• Brake cleaner
2. Prepare the Vehicle:
• Park the vehicle on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.
• Loosen the lug nuts of the front wheels but do not remove them completely.
3. Raise the Vehicle:
• Place the vehicle safety stands at the appropriate locations under the vehicle's chassis.
• Use the jack to lift the front of the vehicle until both front wheels are off the ground.
• Securely lower the vehicle onto the vehicle stands.
4. Remove the Wheel:
• Use a lug wrench to remove the loosened lug nuts and take off the wheel.
5. Remove the Brake Caliper:
• Locate the brake caliper on the back of the wheel hub.
• Remove the bolts holding the caliper in place. You may need the breaker bar for this step.
• Carefully lift and remove the caliper. Suspend it with a wire or bungee cord to avoid damaging the brake line.
6. Remove the Old Brake Disc:
• Inspect the brake pads and replace them if necessary.
• Locate the two retaining bolts holding the brake disc to the wheel hub.
• Remove the retaining bolts and take off the old brake disc.
7. Clean the Hub and Surface:
• Use a wire brush and brake cleaner to clean the area around the wheel hub and the surface where the new disc will be mounted.
8. Install the New Brake Disc:
• Place the new brake disc onto the wheel hub, ensuring it sits flush against the surface.
• Secure the brake disc with the retaining bolts. Tighten them securely.
9. Reinstall the Caliper:
• Reposition the caliper over the brake disc.
• Install and tighten the bolts to secure the caliper in place.
10. Reinstall the Wheel:
• Place the wheel back onto the wheel hub.
• Put the lug nuts back on and tighten them. Do not fully tighten them at this point.
11. Lower the Vehicle:
• Use the jack to raise the vehicle slightly until the weight is off the vehicle safety stands.
• Remove the safety stands.
• Slowly lower the vehicle until it's sitting on its wheels.
12. Tighten the Lug Nuts:
• Fully tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to evenly distribute the pressure.
13. Test the Brakes:
• Before driving the vehicle, test the brakes by pressing the brake pedal firmly to ensure the brakes are working properly.
Remember, if you're unsure or uncomfortable performing these steps, it's best to consult with a professional mechanic.
