How do you change the drive belt on a 1997 Vauxhall Astra Merit 1.6?

Tools and materials needed:

- Replacement drive belt (check owner’s manual for correct size)

- Socket wrench set

- Pliers

- Screwdriver

- Jack and jack stands

- Safety glasses

Instructions:

1. Park your car on a level surface and apply the parking brake. Engage the parking break.

2. Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down completely.

3. Open the hood of your car and locate the drive belt.

4. Use the socket wrench set to loosen the bolt or nut that holds the belt tensioner in place.

5. Use the pliers to hold the tensioner in place while you loosen the bolt or nut.

6. Once the belt tensioner is loose, you can remove the drive belt from the pulleys.

7. Compare the old drive belt to the new one to make sure they are the same size.

8. If the belts are the same size, you can install the new drive belt by placing it around the pulleys in the same way that the old belt was installed.

9. Tighten the bolt or nut that holds the belt tensioner in place.

10. Close the hood of your car and start the engine.

11. Visually inspect your work and make sure the drive belt is properly installed.

It is important to note that working with belts and pulleys can be dangerous. Always wear safety glasses and be careful not to get your fingers caught in any of the moving parts. If you are not confident in your ability to perform this task, it is best to take your car to a qualified mechanic.
