How do you change brake shoes on a 2003 Kia Rio?

Tools Needed:

- Safety glasses

- Jack and jack stands

- Lug wrench

- Socket wrench set

- Flat-head screwdriver

- Brake cleaner

- Brake fluid

- New brake shoes

Instructions:

_1. Park your car on a level surface and engage the parking brake. Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down._

_2. Loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheels. Do not remove the lug nuts completely._

_3. Jack up the rear of your car until the wheels are off the ground. Set the parking brake. Secure your Kia with jack stands._

_4. Remove the lug nuts and take off the rear wheels._

_5. Locate the brake shoes inside the brake drum. There are two brake shoes per wheel._

_6. Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry the brake shoe retaining springs off. Be careful not to damage the brake shoes._

_7. Once the brake shoe retaining springs are removed, you can take out the old brake shoes._

_8. Clean the brake drums with brake cleaner. Make sure to remove all dirt, grease, and brake dust._

_9. Install the new brake shoes. Make sure the brake shoes are properly seated in the brake drums._

_10. Reinstall the brake shoe retaining springs._

_11. Reinstall the rear wheels and lug nuts. Tighten the lug nuts until they are snug._

_12. Lower your Kia from the jack stands._

_13. Pump the brake pedal several times until you feel a firm pedal._

Note:_ You may need to bleed the brakes if you have spongy brakes after replacing the brake shoes. Consult a qualified mechanic if you are not comfortable bleeding the brakes yourself._
