1. Park your car in a safe location. This means pulling over to the side of the road in a well-lit area, away from traffic. If you are on a busy road, you may want to turn on your hazard lights and put on your parking brake.
2. Get out of your car and open the trunk. Locate your spare tire, jack, and lug wrench.
3. Place the chock behind the tire that is diagonally opposite the flat tire. This will help to prevent your car from rolling while you are changing the tire.
4. Jack up your car until the flat tire is off the ground. Be careful not to jack up the car too high, as this could damage your car.
5. Remove the lug nuts from the flat tire. Use the lug wrench to turn the lug nuts counterclockwise until they are completely removed.
6. Remove the flat tire from the car. Be careful not to drop the tire.
7. Place the spare tire on the car. Line up the lug holes on the spare tire with the lug bolts on the car. Hand-tighten the lug nuts until they are snug.
8. Lower the car until the spare tire is on the ground. Be careful not to drop the car.
9. Tighten the lug nuts with the lug wrench. Tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern, tightening each lug nut a little bit at a time until they are snug.
10. Lower the jack.
11. Put away the jack, lug wrench, and spare tire.
12. Drive slowly to a tire shop to have the flat tire repaired or replaced.
Additional Tips:
* If lug nut cover present on your vehicle first use the lug wrench to remove the lug nut covers
* If you have a hubcap, you may need to remove it before accessing your lug nuts. Use the flat end of the lug wrench to pry off the hubcap.
* If you are having difficulty removing lug nut loosen the lug nuts just a little bit while the car is still on the ground.
* If you do not have a proper lug wrench, you can attempt to loosen lug nuts using the lug wrench that is often found in the spare tire compartment (It may not fit properly or may not be effective to remove properly tightened lug nuts).
* If you are unable to change the flat tire on your own, you can call for roadside assistance or have your car towed to a tire shop.
