How do you change the oil and filter 2005 Honda Shadow VLX VT600?

Tools and Materials Needed:

- New oil filter (refer to your owner's manual for the correct size)

- New oil (refer to your owner's manual for the recommended type and amount)

- Oil drain pan

- Funnel

- Wrench

- Rags

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Warm up the engine. This will help the oil flow more easily and drain more completely. Let it run for a few minutes, but do not let it overheat.

2. Turn off the engine and let it cool down slightly. You don't want to burn yourself with hot oil.

3. Place the oil drain pan under the oil drain plug. The oil drain plug is located on the bottom of the engine, usually near the front. It may be covered by a skid plate, which you will need to remove first.

4. Loosen the oil drain plug with a wrench. Be careful not to drop the bolt into the oil pan.

5. Allow the oil to drain completely. This may take a few minutes.

6. Replace the oil drain plug. Tighten it securely with the wrench.

7. Locate the oil filter. The oil filter is located on the side of the engine, near the top.

8. Use a wrench to loosen the oil filter. Turn it counterclockwise until it is loose.

9. Remove the oil filter. Be careful not to spill any oil.

10. Apply a thin coat of new oil to the gasket of the new oil filter. This will help to create a seal and prevent leaks.

11. Screw on the new oil filter. Hand-tighten it until it is snug, then give it an additional 1/2 to 3/4 turn with the wrench.

12. Add new oil to the engine. Use a funnel to add the recommended amount of new oil.

13. Check the oil level. The oil level should be between the "full" and "add" marks on the dipstick.

14. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. This will circulate the new oil throughout the engine.

15. Check for leaks. Look under the bike for any drips or leaks. If you see any leaks, tighten the oil drain plug or oil filter until the leak stops.

Tips:

- If you have a hard time reaching the oil drain plug or oil filter, you may need to use an extension on your wrench.

- If you spill any oil, clean it up immediately with a rag.

- Dispose of the old oil and filter properly.
