1. Tools and Parts:
- Basic tools: wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers.
- Magneto rebuilding/repair kit (this will include points, a condenser, and other small components).
- New gaskets and seals.
- Contact cement or shellac.
- Ohmmeter.
- 12-volt battery.
2. Preparations:
- Disconnect battery.
- Drain oil from primary case.
- Remove primary cover.
3. Disassembly:
- Remove ignition points and condenser.
- Remove rotor by unscrewing the retaining nut.
- Slide the rotor off carefully, being mindful not to damage the wires or insulation.
- Dismantle the stator.
4. Cleaning:
- Clean all parts with a suitable degreaser.
- Allow parts to dry thoroughly.
5. Inspection:
- Check all parts for damage.
- Replace damaged components.
6. Assembly:
- Reinstall the stator.
- Reinstall the rotor. Make sure the rotor is properly seated and tighten the retaining nut securely.
- Reinstall the ignition points and condenser.
- Adjust ignition point gap.
- Make final wiring connections.
7. Testing:
- Attach a 12-volt battery to the magneto and rotate the rotor.
- Check for a spark at the spark plug wire.
- Verify that the points open and close properly as the rotor turns.
8. Reinstall primary:
- Reinstall primary cover.
- Install a new gasket.
- Connect the battery.
