Gather the necessary tools and materials.
- Oil filter wrench
- 17mm wrench
- Oil pan
- New oil filter (Harley-Davidson part number 63731-89)
- New o-ring for oil drain plug (Harley-Davidson part number 11100)
- New crush washer for oil filter (Harley-Davidson part number 62222)
- Funnel
- Rags
Prepare the motorcycle.
1. Run the motorcycle until the engine is warm. This will help the oil to drain more easily.
2. Turn off the motorcycle and allow it to cool down for a few minutes.
3. Place the oil pan under the motorcycle, directly below the oil drain plug.
4. Remove the oil drain plug with the 17mm wrench. Allow the oil to drain completely.
5. Replace the oil drain plug with the new o-ring and tighten it with the 17mm wrench.
Remove the oil filter.
1. Locate the oil filter on the left side of the engine, near the bottom.
2. Use the oil filter wrench to loosen the oil filter.
3. Remove the oil filter and discard it.
4. Apply a thin coat of new oil to the gasket of the new oil filter.
5. Screw the new oil filter onto the engine until it is snug.
Add new oil.
1. Use the funnel to add new oil to the engine.
2. Add the amount of oil specified in the owner's manual.
3. Check the oil level with the dipstick. The oil level should be between the "add" and "full" marks on the dipstick.
Start the motorcycle.
1. Start the motorcycle and allow it to run for a few minutes. This will circulate the new oil throughout the engine.
2. Check for any leaks. If you see any leaks, tighten the oil drain plug or oil filter until the leak stops.
