Tools and materials needed:
- Car jack and jack stands
- Socket wrench set
- Ratchet wrench
- Brake cleaner
- Brake grease
- Replacement brake pads
- Replacement brake rotors (if needed)
Step 1: Prepare your car and safety precautions
• Park your car on a level surface and apply the parking brake.
• Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels, but do not remove them completely at this point.
• Use a car jack to safely raise the front of the car and place jack stands under the car's frame to support it.
Step 2: Remove the front wheels
• Use a socket wrench to remove the lug nuts and take off the front wheels.
Step 3: Remove the brake caliper assembly
• Locate the brake caliper assembly on the backside of the wheel hub. It consists of a housing that encloses the brake pads and pistons.
• Use a socket wrench to loosen and remove the bolts holding the brake caliper in place.
• Gently lift off the brake caliper assembly, taking care not to strain or damage the brake line. It is connected by a flexible hose to the brake system.
Step 4: Remove the old brake pads
• Slide out the old brake pads from their slots within the caliper housing.
Step 5: Inspect the brake rotors
• Examine the brake rotors (discs) for any signs of wear, damage, or deep scratches. If the rotors are severely worn or damaged, they will need to be replaced at this time.
Step 6: Clean the caliper and components
• Clean the brake caliper housing and components with brake cleaner to remove any grease or dirt. This ensures that the new brake pads will seat properly.
Step 7: Apply brake grease
• Apply a small amount of brake grease to the contact points of the caliper and brake pad backing plate. This helps prevent brake noise and ensures smooth operation.
Step 8: Install the new brake pads
• Slide the new brake pads into the caliper housing ensuring that they are correctly seated and aligned.
Step 9: Reattach the brake caliper
• Place the brake caliper assembly back onto the wheel hub and loosely insert the mounting bolts.
Step 10: Reinstall the wheels
• Place the wheels back onto the car and reinstall the lug nuts. Tighten the lug nuts by hand until they are snug.
Step 11: Lower the car
• Gently lower the car until it is settled back on the ground, removing the jack stands and lowering with the jack.
Step 12: Tighten the lug nuts
• Using a socket wrench, tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to the recommended torque specification for your vehicle. Check your owner's manual or workshop manual for the correct torque value.
Step 13: Test the brakes
• Before driving, test the brakes by pressing the brake pedal a few times. Ensure the brakes engage smoothly and evenly.
