- Flathead screwdriver
- 10 mm socket wrench
- Set of Torx wrenches
- Replacement serpentine belt tensioner
Instructions:
1. Preparation
- Park your car on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.
- Open your hood and allow it to cool down if the engine has been recently running.
2. Locate the Serpentine Belt Tensioner
- The tensioner is usually positioned near the front of the engine, close to the serpentine belt.
- Refer to your vehicle's repair manual for the exact location if needed.
3. De-tension the Serpentine Belt
- Use the flathead screwdriver to press the tensioner lever (located on the tensioner) to relieve the tension on the serpentine belt.
4. Remove the Old Tensioner
- Use a 10mm socket wrench to loosen and remove the bolts holding the tensioner in place.
- Some models may have Torx bolts instead. Use the appropriate Torx wrench in these cases.
5. Install the New Tensioner
- Place the new tensioner in position and secure it with the bolts you removed earlier.
- Make sure the tensioner arm is properly aligned with the belt.
6. Re-tension the Serpentine Belt
- Use the flathead screwdriver to re-tension the serpentine belt.
- Ensure that the belt is tight and not loose, but not excessively taut either.
7. Test the Tension
- Start your engine and let it run for a few minutes.
- Check that the serpentine belt is running smoothly and not making any unusual noises.
- If necessary, adjust the tension again.
8. Clean up
- Clean any spilled fluids and tools before closing the hood.
That's it! You have successfully replaced the serpentine belt tensioner on your 2000 VW Passat. If you face any difficulties, consult your repair manual or seek professional help.
