1. Park your Beetle on a level surface and apply the parking brake.
2. Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels, but do not remove them.
3. Jack up the front end of your Beetle and support the frame with jack stands.
4. Remove the front wheels.
5. Locate the brake adjuster on the back of the brake drum. It is a small, round, slotted piece of metal.
6. Insert a flat-head screwdriver into the slot and turn it clockwise until the brake shoes contact the brake drum.
7. Continue to turn the adjuster until the brake shoes start to drag on the brake drum.
8. Once the brake shoes are dragging, back off the adjuster about 1/4 turn.
9. Reinstall the wheels and lower the Beetle.
10. Test the brakes by applying light pressure to the brake pedal. The brakes should feel firm and even.
NOTE: If the brakes do not feel firm after adjustment, you may need to replace the brake shoes or brake drums.
