How do you replace a BMW E36 alternator belt?

Replacing an alternator belt on a BMW E36 is a relatively straightforward task that can be completed in about an hour with basic tools.

Tools required:

- 10mm socket wrench

- 13mm socket wrench

- Ratchet

- Extension bar

- Pliers

Instructions:

1. Park your BMW E36 in a safe location and turn off the engine.

2. Open the hood and locate the alternator belt. It is located on the front of the engine, running between the alternator and the crankshaft pulley.

3. Use the 13mm socket wrench to loosen the alternator mounting bolt until you are able to pivot the alternator on its mount bracket.

4. Use the 10mm socket wrench to loosen the tensioner pulley bolt. This will release the tension on the alternator belt.

5. Remove the alternator belt by pulling it off the pulleys.

6. Slide the new alternator belt onto the pulleys, being careful not to twist or kink it.

6. Tighten the tensioner pulley bolt. You may need to use a pry bar for leverage to push the tensioner pulley into place.

7. Tighten the alternator mounting bolt.

8. Start the engine and check the belt tension. It should be snug but not too tight.

9. If necessary, adjust the belt tension by loosening the tensioner pulley bolt and then tightening it again.

10. Turn off the engine and close the hood.

Be sure to dispose of the old alternator belt in a responsible manner.
