Can the car company that repossessed your keep personal property in it?

In most U.S. states, the answer is no. When a car is repossessed, everything in it must be returned to the owner within a certain amount of time, usually 30 days.

However, there are a few exceptions to this rule. For example, if the car company has a lien on any personal property in the car, they may be able to keep it until the debt is paid off. Additionally, if the car company believes that any of the personal property is stolen, they may be able to hold onto it until law enforcement can determine who owns it.

Repossession laws vary from state to state. To learn more about your state's repossession laws, refer to the legal code or contact a legal professional.
