Once you have gathered your tools, follow these steps:
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. This will prevent you from accidentally shocking yourself while working on the ignition switch.
2. Remove the four screws that hold the steering column cover in place. These screws are located on the top and bottom of the cover around the steering column.
3. Remove the steering column cover. This will expose the ignition switch.
4. Remove the two screws that hold the ignition switch in place. These screws are located on the left and right sides of the switch.
5. Pull the ignition switch out of the steering column. Be careful not to drop the switch, as it is a small part and can be easily lost.
6. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition switch. This connector is located on the back of the switch.
7. Remove the ignition switch from the vehicle.
To install a new ignition switch, simply reverse the steps above. Be sure to reconnect the negative battery cable once you are finished.
Here are some additional tips for removing the ignition switch from a 1966 Volkswagen Beetle:
- If the screws are rusted, you may need to use a penetrating oil to loosen them.
- Be careful not to damage the wiring when disconnecting the electrical connector.
