How do you change the rear main seal in 1991 Jeep Cherokee 4.0?

Parts Needed:

- New rear main seal

- RTV silicone sealant

- Oil pan gasket (optional)

Tools Needed:

- 3/8-inch drive ratchet

- 10 mm socket

- 15 mm socket

- 24 mm socket

- Flat head screwdriver

- Pry bar

- Gasket scraper

- Hammer

Instructions:

1.) Jack up the vehicle and securely support it with jack stands.

2.) Remove the oil pan by removing the bolts that hold it in place. Be careful not to spill any oil. If the oil pan gasket is damaged or leaking, replace it with a new one.

3.) Locate the rear main seal, which is located between the engine and the transmission. It is a round, black seal.

4.) Using a flat head screwdriver and a pry bar, carefully pry the old rear main seal out of its housing. Be careful not to damage the crankshaft.

5.) Clean the housing of the old seal and apply a thin layer of RTV silicone sealant to the new seal.

6.) Position the new rear main seal in the housing and tap it into place using a hammer. Make sure the seal is evenly seated all the way around.

7.) Allow the silicone sealant to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.

8.) Reinstall the oil pan and bolts.

9.) Lower the vehicle and fill it with new oil.
