Where is the oil pan drain plug on 2004 cavalier?

Locate the oil pan drain plug on a 2004 Cavalier.

Oil Pan Overview

The oil pan under the car holds the oil that lubricates the engine. There is a drain plug on the bottom of the pan that allows you to drain the oil.

Tools Needed

- 5mm Hex wrench

- Oil drain pan

- Replacement oil filter (if desired)

Here is the step-by-step procedure to help you find the oil pan drain plug:

Lift your vehicle: Park your car on a level surface and apply the parking brake. For safety reasons, raise your vehicle using a jack and jack stands. Place the jack stands under the frame or designated lift points, not the plastic side skirts. Never work on a vehicle supported only by a jack.

Locate the oil pan: The oil pan is usually a metal pan located at the bottom of the engine. It is usually silver or black and will be the lowest part of the engine besides the exhaust system.

Locate the oil drain plug: The oil drain plug is usually a 17mm bolt located on the bottom of the oil pan. On some vehicles, the drain plug is may be recessed and the bolt may not appear until the protective cover is removed. Look for a bolt that is located lower than and to the side of the oil filter.

Clean Drain Plug Area

Wipe away any dirt and grime around the oil pan drain plug. This is to prevent the dirt from falling into the oil pan when you remove the drain plug.

Place Oil Drain Pan:

Place the drain pan directly below the plug to catch the oil as it drains. Make sure the pan is low enough so the draining oil will not splash on you or on your driveway.

Remove Oil Plug

Use the hex wrench to loosen the drain plug counter-clockwise to start. Once loosened, remove the plug by turning it out with your fingers the rest of the way. Be prepared for the oil to flow out immediately, so start with a secure connection of your wrench to the plug to prevent splashing.

Allow the Oil to Drain:

Allow the old oil to completely drain out of the oil pan. Wait for the stream of oil to stop completely.

Replace the drain plug:

When finished, replace the drain plug securely. Tighten the plug until it is snug, but do not over-tighten.

Lower your vehicle:

Once you are finished, return your vehicle back down to the ground slowly and carefully.

NOTE:

- Ensure that the drain plug is replaced securely or you may encounter an oil leak during operation.

- Be cautious when working with hot oil, as it may cause burns.
