Tools and Materials Needed:
- Metric socket set
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Phillips-head screwdriver
- Torx screwdriver (optional, depending on door panel fasteners)
- Pliers
- New power window motors
Step 1: Remove the Door Panels:
1. Open the door and locate the screws securing the door panel. These screws may be hidden behind plastic covers or caps. Remove them carefully without damaging the covers.
2. Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry open the clips or retainers that hold the door panel in place. Be cautious not to break the clips.
3. Once all the clips are released, gently lift the door panel upward and detach it from the window sill. Set the door panel aside in a safe place.
Step 2: Locate the Power Window Motor Assembly:
1. With the door panel removed, locate the window motor assembly. It's usually mounted inside the door, held by bolts.
Step 3: Disconnect the Electrical Connector:
1. Before removing any bolts, locate the electrical connector that supplies power to the window motor. It's typically a multi-pin connector.
2. Use a small flat-head screwdriver or your fingers to disconnect the electrical connector.
Step 4: Remove the Mounting Bolts:
1. Use the appropriate socket wrench to remove the mounting bolts that secure the window motor in place. There might be two or more bolts.
Step 5: Remove the Old Window Motor:
1. Once the bolts are removed, you should be able to lift the window motor assembly out of its housing. Disconnect any remaining electrical connectors or cables if necessary.
Step 6: Install the New Window Motor:
1. Position the new window motor in the housing and align it with the mounting holes.
2. Reinsert the mounting bolts and tighten them securely.
Step 7: Reconnect the Electrical Connector:
1. Reconnect the electrical connector that you disconnected earlier. Ensure it's firmly attached to the window motor.
Step 8: Test the Window Motor:
1. Before reassembling the door panel, test the new window motor by operating the power window switch. Ensure that the window moves up and down smoothly.
Step 9: Reinstall the Door Panel:
1. Once you're satisfied with the window motor's operation, reinstall the door panel.
2. Align the panel's clips or retainers with the holes in the door and press firmly until they snap into place.
3. Replace any screws or caps you removed earlier.
Step 10: Repeat for Other Doors:
1. Repeat steps 1 to 9 for the remaining doors on your Pontiac Grand AM GT to replace the other power window motors.
