Note: Before you begin, make sure you have the right tools and parts for the job.
You will need:
- New transmission mount
- Wrench set
- Socket set
- Jack and jack stands
- Safety glasses
Instructions:
1. Park your car on a level surface and turn off the engine.
2. Engage the parking brake
3. Raise your car with a floor jack and support it on jack stands. Make sure the jack stands are placed on the designated lifting points of your vehicle.
4. Locate the transmission mount: In a Ford Focus, the transmission mount is located under the vehicle, connected to the transmission and the subframe.
5. Loosen the bolts that secure the transmission mount: Use a wrench or socket set to loosen the bolts that hold the transmission mount in place. There will typically be two or more bolts. You might need a breaker bar if they are rusted and stuck.
6. Use the jack to support the transmission. Lift the transmission carefully with a floor jack to take the pressure off the transmission mount. Be careful not to damage the transmission pan.
7. Remove the bolts and take the transmission mount off. Once the transmission is safely supported by the jack, remove the bolts entirely and take off the old transmission mount.
8. Install the new transmission mount: Place the new transmission mount in its proper position and insert the bolts. Tighten the bolts securely until they are snug.
9. Lower the transmission jack: Slowly lower the transmission back down using a floor jack.
10. Fully tighten the bolts holding the transmission mount.
11. Lower the vehicle and remove the jack stands.
NOTE: Tighten the bolts to the specified torque as per your vehicle's manufacturer's recommendation. Failure to do so can compromise the security of the mount and potentially lead to transmission issues.
Once you've completed these steps, the transmission mount should be successfully replaced. Before moving the car, double-check that all bolts are tight and secure and the jack stands are removed. Then, slowly lower the car off of the jack stands and take it for a test drive to ensure that the transmission is functioning properly. If you encounter any issues or difficulties during the replacement process, consulting a qualified mechanic or referencing the vehicle's repair manual is recommended.
