Instructions
1. Open the hood of the car and remove the negative battery cable.
2. Locate the expansion valve. It is usually bolted to the top of the air conditioning condenser, under the hood on the passenger's side.
3. Disconnect the hoses from the expansion valve. There will be two hoses, one that goes to the condenser and one that goes to the evaporator. To remove a hose simply use the spanner wrench and loosen the fittings on the expansion valve. Be sure to put the fittings in a safe place.
4. Remove the bolts holding the expansion valve to the condenser. These bolts are usually held in place with brackets or metal retainers.
5. Once the bolts are removed, you can take the expansion valve out of the car. Be careful not to drop it, as it is a very delicate component.
6. Install the new expansion valve.
- First, put a new O-ring on the valve and screw it into the condenser by hand.
- Then, put a wrench around it to tighten it securely.
- Tighten the retaining bolts until they are sung.
7. Replace the hoses you removed by first putting a small amount of refrigerant oil to lubricate the connection. Then, screw the fittings back onto the expansion valve.
- Tighten them until they are secure but do not overtighten or you will damage them.
8. Add new refrigerant to the air conditioner. You will need to add the amount of refrigerant that is specified in your car's service manual.
9. Close the hood of the car, reconnect the battery negative cable, and start the engine. Allow it to run for a few minutes to check for any leaks.
