How do you remove a clutch on 89 Honda Prelude?

Here is a general guide to remove a clutch on a 1989 Honda Prelude. However, please keep in mind that every vehicle is different so I recommend checking your vehicle's service manual for year-specific instructions.

1. Prepare your vehicle. Park your car in a safe location, apply the parking brake, and chock the wheels.

2. Disconnect the battery. To prevent any electrical accidents, disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.

3. Remove transmission access covers. There are two sections to the transmission cover. First, remove the rear section by removing several bolts from the sides and rear. Next, remove the main section of the transmission cover by removing the bolts from around its edges.

4. Remove starter. Disconnect the wires and bolts holding the starter onto the car. Remove the starter.

5. Disconnect and remove clutch cable. Underneath the car you'll need to disconnect the clutch cable from the clutch arm by removing a pin. This will allow the clutch fork to be removed once the transmission is off.

6. Support transmission jack. You'll want a jack to support the transmission from below before removing its mounts.

7. Remove transmission mount. Remove the bolts that hold the transmission to the transmission mount.

8. Remove rear axle nuts and bolts. Jack up the rear of the car until you can slide the wheels fully off. Loosen the axle nuts and pry off the dust covers from the wheel hubs. Slide the axles all the way out from both hubs and transmission using pry bars and a hammer if needed.

9. Remove transmission to engine bolts. Remove the bolts that connect the transmission to the engine.

10. Slide the transmission out. While supporting the transmission, slide it back until the splines on the clutch disc can be seen. Make sure the clutch disc can freely move in and out of the flywheel using a screwdriver or pry bar. If it doesn't move in and out freely, it could indicate a problem with the clutch release mechanism or clutch master cylinder.

11. Inspect & replace clutch components. Slide the transmission backwards as far as it will go and replace the clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and the pilot bearing.

12. Reassemble. Reinstall all of the components you removed in reverse order.
