- 10 mm socket with ratchet
- Flathead screwdriver
- Philips head screwdriver
- Spark plug wrench
- New valve cover gasket
- RTV silicone sealant
- Oil drain pan
- 5 quarts of new oil
- Oil filter (optional)
Instructions:
1. Park your car on a level surface and turn off the engine. Allow the engine to cool down completely.
2. Disconnect the negative terminal of your car's battery.
3. Locate the valve cover. It is located at the top of the engine, and it is usually made of metal.
4. Remove the bolts that hold the valve cover in place. Use a 10 mm socket with ratchet to loosen the bolts.
5. Carefully pry off the valve cover. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry off the valve cover.
6. Clean the valve cover mating surfaces. Use a rag and some degreaser to clean the mating surfaces of the valve cover and the cylinder head.
7. Apply a thin bead of RTV silicone sealant to the mating surface of the valve cover. Use your finger or a small brush to apply the sealant.
8. Place the new valve cover gasket over the cylinder head. Make sure to insert the gasket all around the cylinder head. Make sure the gasket does not block the oil passages.
9. Reinstall the valve cover bolts and tighten them securely. Use a 10 mm socket with ratchet to tighten the bolts.
10. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
11. Start your car and let it run for a few minutes. This will allow the RTV sealant to set.
12. Check for leaks. Look under the car for any signs of oil leaks. If you see any leaks, tighten the valve cover bolts further.
13. Change the oil and oil filter (optional). This is a good time to change the oil and oil filter since you have already drained the oil.
Tips:
- Make sure to clean the valve cover and cylinder head mating surfaces thoroughly before installing the new gasket.
- Apply the sealant to the valve cover gasket only.
- Make sure to insert the gasket all around the cylinder head.
- Tighten the valve cover bolts evenly and securely.
- Start your car and let it run for a few minutes to allow the RTV sealant to set.
- Check for leaks after starting your car.
