How do you replace the alternator on a 2000 Pontiac Grand AM V6 3.4L?

Tools Needed:

- 10mm socket

- 15mm socket

- Ratchet

- Socket extensions (optional)

- Phillips head screwdriver

- Flathead screwdriver (optional)

- Bungee cord (optional)

Procedure:

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal using the 10mm socket.

2. Remove the top engine cover by removing the four 10mm bolts.

3. Remove the serpentine belt by 1) locating the tensioner pulley and inserting a 15mm socket, 2) rotating the tensioner counter-clockwise to release tension on the belt, and 3) lifting the belt off of the pulleys and moving it out of the way.

4. Disconnect all wires going to the alternator by squeezing the plastic tab down on the connector and wiggling it off of the alternator post.

5. There will be one bracket holding the alternator to the engine that needs to be removed. Disconnect this bracket by removing the two 15mm bolts.

6. Remove the two bolts holding the alternator in place that are easily visible from the front.

7. Loosen the third alternator bolt which is more hidden and hard to reach; you can use a socket extension and a flat head screwdriver to pry the bolt loose.

8. Remove the top alternator bolt first and then the middle one. These bolts may be tight so use caution when removing. TIP: Bungee cord can be used to support the alternator while the two front bolts are being removed.

9. Remove the 10mm bolt holding the power wire (looks like a thin black box) to the chassis to allow you to move it out of the way.

10. You may need to pry down the lower alternator bracket with a flathead screwdriver to remove the alternator.

11. Remove the alternator by carefully lifting it out.

12. (optional) Before installing the new alternator, clean the contact surface on the engine block using sandpaper.

13. Install the new alternator. Tighten all bolts securely (use a 15mm socket).

14. Reattach the alternator wiring.

15. Reattach the serpentine belt.

16. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.

17. Double check all connections to make sure they are secure.

18. Start the vehicle to verify the alternator is working correctly.
