Tools Needed:
1. Spark plug wrench or 5/8 inch spark plug socket
2. Spark plug gap tool (optional)
3. 10 mm socket
4. 13 mm socket
5. Ratchet
6. Extension for the ratchet
7. Screwdriver
8. Flashlight
Steps to Replace Rear Spark Plugs:
1. Preparation:
- Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery before starting any work.
2. Locate Spark Plug Wires:
- Identify the three spark plug wires located on the rear side of the engine. Each wire is attached to a specific spark plug.
3. Disconnect Spark Plugs Wires:
- Using a 10mm socket, loosen and disconnect the bolts that hold the ignition coil brackets to the engine.
- This will provide better access to the spark plug wires.
- Gently remove the spark plug wires by pulling them out of the spark plug boots. Be careful not to damage the wires.
4. Remove Coil Packs:
- After removing the spark plug wires, you will see the coil packs. Remove the retaining bolts that hold the coil packs in place using a 13mm socket.
- There are three individual coil packs that each service two spark plugs.
- Carefully lift and remove the coil packs. Set them aside in a safe location.
5. Access Spark Plugs:
- Once the coil packs are removed, you will have access to the spark plugs. Be cautious as the engine might still be hot, and these steps should only be performed when the engine is cool.
6. Remove Old Spark Plugs:
- Use the spark plug wrench or a 5/8-inch socket and ratchet extension to loosen and remove the old spark plugs. Be sure to exercise care while removing the spark plugs to avoid damaging the area around them.
7. Check Gap on New Spark Plugs:
- Ensure the gap on the new spark plugs is correct as per the manufacturer's recommendation. Use the spark plug gap tool, if necessary.
8. Install New Spark Plugs:
- Carefully insert the new spark plugs into the spark plug holes. Hand-tighten the spark plugs to ensure they are not cross-threaded.
- Use the spark plug wrench or socket and extension to tighten the spark plugs until snug. Do not overtighten the spark plugs.
9. Reinstall Coil Packs:
- Reinstall the coil packs by aligning them with their respective spark plugs. Secure them in place using the bolts you removed earlier.
- Make sure the coil packs are properly seated and the bolts are tightened securely.
10. Reconnect Spark Plug Wires:
- Connect the spark plug wires back to the appropriate spark plugs. Ensure that each wire is firmly attached to the spark plug boot.
- Reattach the ignition coil brackets using the 10mm socket.
11. Test Run the Vehicle:
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
- Start the Freestar or Monterey and let it idle for a few minutes.
- Take the vehicle for a test drive to assess if the engine is running smoothly.
Remember, working around the engine, especially when it has been in operation, can be dangerous due to the presence of hot components. Make sure to practice safety precautions and avoid contact with hot surfaces. If the task seems complex or you encounter any difficulties, it is advisable to seek assistance from a qualified mechanic or automotive professional.
