This car has an OBD-II connector under the dash by the driver's right knee. Many auto parts stores will lend or rent a scan tool that will pull the codes for you for free. You can also purchase an inexpensive scan tool that will allow you to read and erase the trouble codes yourself. Most scan tools operate as follows:
1. Turn the ignition key to the "On" position without starting the engine.
2. Plug the scan tool into the OBD-II connector.
3. Turn on the scan tool and follow the instructions on the display to read the trouble codes.
Erasing Trouble Codes
Once you have recorded the trouble codes, you can erase them from the car's computer. This will turn off the check engine light. To clear the trouble codes, simply:
1. Turn the ignition key to the "Off" position.
2. Disconnect the battery's negative terminal.
3. Wait 30 seconds, then reconnect the battery's negative terminal.
Note: If the check engine light comes back on after you have erased the trouble codes, it means that there is still a problem with the car. You should have the car inspected by a qualified mechanic.
