* Jack and jack stands
* Lug wrench
* Socket set
* Ratchet
* Flat-head screwdriver
* C-clamp
* Brake cleaner
* New brake pads
* New brake rotors (if necessary)
Procedure
Step 1: Park the car safely
- Turn off the engine and engage the parking brake.
- Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels, but do not remove them completely.
Step 2: Raise the car
- Position the jack under the front of the car, near the wheel you are working on.
- Raise the car until the wheel is off the ground.
- Secure the car with jack stands.
Step 3: Remove the wheel
- Remove the lug nuts and remove the wheel.
Step 4: Remove the caliper
- Locate the brake caliper on the back of the wheel hub.
- There are two bolts that hold the caliper in place. Use the socket set and ratchet to remove these bolts.
- Carefully remove the caliper from the rotor.
Step 5: Remove the old brake pads
- There are two brake pads on each side of the rotor. Use the flat-head screwdriver to pry the brake pads out of the caliper.
Step 6: Inspect the brake rotor
- While you have the caliper off, take a look at the brake rotor. If the rotor is warped or has deep grooves, it will need to be replaced.
Step 7: Clean the caliper
- Use the brake cleaner to clean the caliper and remove any dirt or debris.
Step 8: Install the new brake pads
- Place the new brake pads into the caliper. Make sure that the pads are seated properly.
Step 9: Reinstall the caliper
- Place the caliper over the rotor and secure it with the bolts. Tighten the bolts until they are snug.
Step 10: Reinstall the wheel
- Put the wheel back on the hub and secure it with the lug nuts. Tighten the lug nuts until they are snug.
Step 11: Test the brakes
- Lower the car and remove the jack stands.
- Start the car and pump the brake pedal a few times. The pedal should feel firm.
- Test the brakes by driving at a low speed and braking gently.
Congratulations! You have successfully replaced the front brake pads and/or rotors on your 2005 Hyundai Elantra.
