How do you replace the front brake pads on a 1999 Ford Expedition?

Tools and Materials Needed:

- Pliers

- Flat-head screwdriver

- Jack

- Jack stands

- Socket wrench set

- C-clamp

- Brake pad grease

- New brake pads

- Brake cleaner

Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle

- Park your Expedition on a flat surface.

- Turn off the engine and engage the parking brake.

- Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels, but do not remove them completely.

Step 2: Lift the Vehicle

- Use the jack to lift the front end of the vehicle until the tires are off the ground.

- Place jack stands under the frame of the vehicle for support.

Step 3: Remove the Wheels

- Remove the lug nuts and take off the front wheels.

Step 4: Remove the Caliper

- Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry open the dust cover on the caliper.

- Remove the caliper mounting bolts using the socket wrench.

- Lift the caliper off the rotor.

- Do not allow the caliper to hang by the brake line. Use a bungee cord or zip tie to secure it to the suspension.

Step 5: Remove the Old Brake Pads

- Remove the anti-rattle clips from the caliper bracket.

- Use a C-clamp to compress the brake piston. This will create space between the rotor and the brake pads.

- Remove the old brake pads from the caliper bracket.

Step 6: Install the New Brake Pads

- Apply brake pad grease to the back of the new brake pads.

- Insert the new brake pads into the caliper bracket.

- Reinstall the anti-rattle clips.

Step 7: Reinstall the Caliper

- Place the caliper over the rotor.

- Reinstall the caliper mounting bolts and tighten them securely.

Step 8: Reinstall the Wheels

- Reinstall the front wheels and tighten the lug nuts.

Step 9: Release the Vehicle from the Jack Stands

- Lower the vehicle using the jack.

- Remove the jack stands.

Step 10: Test the Brakes

- Start the vehicle and press the brake pedal. The brakes should feel firm and responsive.

Step 11: Brake Bedding

- Drive the vehicle slowly for a few minutes to bed in the new brake pads. This will help ensure optimal performance and longevity of the brake pads.

Note: Always follow the specific instructions provided in your vehicle's owner's manual when replacing brake pads. If you are not comfortable performing this task, it is recommended to have the brake pads replaced by a qualified mechanic.
