How do you replace an inner cv boot on a Subaru Outback?

Replacing the inner CV boot on a Subaru Outback involves the following steps:

1. Gather Tools and Parts:

- Replacement inner CV boot kit (includes new boot, grease, clamps, and bands)

- Flat-head screwdriver

- Pliers

- Grease gun

- Axle nut socket

- Impact wrench or breaker bar

- Jack and jack stands

- Safety glasses

- Gloves

2. Prepare the Vehicle:

- Engage the parking brake.

- Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel near the affected CV boot.

- Raise the vehicle using a jack and secure it with jack stands.

- Remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel.

3. Remove the Axle Nut:

- Locate the axle nut in the center of the wheel hub.

- Use an impact wrench or breaker bar to loosen and remove the axle nut.

4. Disconnect the Tie Rod End:

- Locate the tie rod end connected to the steering knuckle.

- Use a wrench to loosen the tie rod nut and disconnect the tie rod end.

- Secure the steering knuckle to prevent it from moving.

5. Remove the CV Axle:

- Slide the flat head screwdriver into the CV boot and loosen the clamp.

- Use pliers to remove the clamps holding the CV boot in place.

- Pull the CV boot off the axle, exposing the inner CV joint.

- If the boot is stuck, you may need to carefully pry it off with a screwdriver or a pry bar.

- Remove the axle by pulling it out of the transmission.

6. Clean the CV Joint:

- Remove any old grease or dirt from the CV joint using a rag.

- Inspect the CV joint for any signs of damage or wear. If the joint is damaged, it may need to be replaced.

7. Install the New CV Boot:

- Apply a thin layer of grease to the inner CV joint.

- Slide the new CV boot onto the axle, making sure it is seated properly.

- Install the clamps provided in the kit to secure the CV boot in place.

8. Reinstall the CV Axle:

- Insert the CV axle back into the transmission until it seats properly. Tap it gently with a rubber mallet if necessary.

- Hand-tighten the axle nut.

9. Reconnect the Tie Rod End:

- Reattach the tie rod end to the steering knuckle and secure the nut.

10. Reinstall the Wheel:

- Place the wheel back on the hub.

- Hand-tighten the lug nuts.

- Lower the vehicle using the jack.

- Tighten the lug nuts using a star pattern with the impact wrench or breaker bar.

11. Add Grease to the CV Joint:

- Use the grease gun to inject grease into the CV joint through the zerk fitting until grease starts coming out of the boot.

12. Test Drive the Vehicle:

- Take the vehicle for a short test drive to ensure that the CV boot is functioning properly.

Remember, replacing the CV boot requires a thorough understanding of the vehicle's driveline components. If you feel uncertain about your ability to perform this repair, it is recommended to consult a professional mechanic.
