1. Prepare your tools and parts:
* A new CV joint kit that matches your vehicle
* Socket wrenches
* A pry bar or flat-head screwdriver
* A mallet or hammer
* A container for the old grease
2. Park your vehicle on a level surface and apply the parking brake.
3. Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel that is attached to the CV joint you are replacing.
4. Raise your vehicle with a floor jack and place jack stands under the frame for safety.
5. Remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel.
6. Locate the CV joint. It is usually located at the end of the driveshaft, near the wheel.
7. Use a pry bar or flat-head screwdriver to pry off the dust boot. Be careful not to damage the CV joint.
8. Clean the CV joint and surrounding area. Remove any old grease or dirt.
9. Unbolt the CV joint from the driveshaft. Use a socket wrench to loosen and remove the bolts.
10. Remove the CV joint from the wheel hub. Use a pry bar or flat-head screwdriver to pry off the CV joint from the wheel hub.
11. Take the old CV joint apart. To do this, use a flat head screwdriver to pry off the snap rings securing the CV joint parts together.
12. Clean and lubricate the CV joint with grease from your CV joint kit. Pack all the grooves and crevices with the new grease.
13. Reinstall the CV joint onto the wheel hub. Line up the splines on the CV joint with the splines on the wheel hub. Tap the CV joint gently with a mallet or hammer to seat it into place, be sure to seat the snap ring.
14. Bolt the CV joint to the driveshaft.
15. Reinstall the dust boot.
16. Check if the CV joint is functioning properly. Rotate the wheel by hand and make sure there is no play in the joint.
17. Reinstall the wheel and lug nuts. Tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern, gradually tightening each nut until they are snug.
18. Lower the vehicle and remove the jack stands.
19. Take your vehicle for a test drive. Listen for any unusual noises or vibrations. If everything sounds and feels normal, you have successfully replaced the CV joint.
