How do you change the transmission fluid in an 1996 automatic Hyundai Accent?

Materials Needed:

- New transmission fluid (check owner’s manual for specified type and amount)

- Transmission funnel

- 10mm wrench

- Oil drain pan

- Rags

- Safety glasses

Instructions:

1. Safety Steps

- Ensure that the vehicle is parked on level ground with the engine off and in Park (P).

- Engage the parking brake, turn off the engine and allow it to cool down.

- Put on your safety glasses to protect your eyes.

2. Locate the Transmission Drain Plug

- Crawl under the vehicle. The transmission drain plug is usually located on the oil pan of the transmission. In the Hyundai Accent, it’s usually a 10mm bolt.

3. Place the Oil Drain Pan

- Position the oil drain pan under the transmission drain plug.

4. Loosen the Drain Plug

- Use the 10mm wrench to loosen the transmission drain plug, but do not remove it completely. Let the old fluid drain into the oil drain pan.

5. Remove the Transmission Drain Plug

- Once the old fluid has completely drained out, remove the transmission drain plug completely. Be careful not to drop the bolt into the oil drain pan.

6. Replace the Drain Plug

- Once all of the old transmission fluid has drained out, replace the transmission drain plug. Tighten it securely with the 10mm wrench.

7. Add New Transmission Fluid

- Use the transmission funnel to add the recommended amount of new transmission fluid into the transmission fill plug.

- Be sure to check the transmission fluid level with the transmission dipstick.

8. Check for Leaks

- Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Check for any leaks from the transmission drain plug or the transmission fluid dipstick. If there are no leaks, turn off the engine and verify the transmission fluid level.

- Add more fluid if necessary.

9. Reinstall the Transmission Dipstick

- Reinstall the transmission dipstick and re-tighten the drain plug.

10. Dispose of Old Transmission Fluid

- Dispose of the old transmission fluid and filter responsibly according to local regulations.

Tips:

- It is recommended to change the transmission fluid every 30,000 to 60,000 miles or as per your vehicle’s maintenance schedule, whichever comes first.

- If the transmission fluid is dark, has a burnt smell, or has metal particles in it, it should be changed immediately.
