How do you replace front brakes on a 1998 Chrysler Town and Country?

Replacing the front brakes on a 1998 Chrysler Town and Country requires some basic mechanical skills and common tools. Here's a general guide to help you through the process:

Tools and Materials Needed:

- Jack and jack stands

- Socket set

- Phillips head screwdriver

- Flat head screwdriver

- Wire brush

- Brake cleaner

- Brake grease

- New brake pads and rotors (if necessary)

Procedure:

Step 1: Prepare Your Vehicle:

1. Park your vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.

2. Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels, but do not remove them completely.

3. Use the jack to lift the front of the vehicle and place the jack stands underneath the appropriate support points.

4. Remove the lug nuts and the front wheels.

Step 2: Remove the Old Brake Pads:

1. Remove the caliper mounting bracket bolts using a socket wrench.

2. Once the caliper is removed, place a block of wood or a C-clamp in between the brake piston and the rotor to prevent it from being damaged while changing the pads.

Step 3: Inspect the Brake Rotors:

1. Inspect the brake rotors for any visible signs of wear, such as grooves or excessive thickness. If the rotors are below the recommended thickness, they should be replaced.

Step 4: Install New Brake Pads:

1. Place the new brake pads in the caliper bracket and align them properly.

2. Ensure the brake pad backing plate is evenly seated in the caliper.

3. Slide the caliper back over the new pads and reinstall the caliper mounting bracket.

4. Tighten the caliper mounting bracket bolts.

Step 5: Install New Brake Rotors (If Necessary):

1. If you're replacing the brake rotors, unbolt the old rotors and remove them from the hub.

2. Clean the hub surface thoroughly.

3. Slide the new rotor onto the hub and reinstall the mounting bolts. Make sure the rotor is seated properly.

Step 6: Reinstall the Wheels:

1. Reinstall the wheels onto the hub and hand tighten the lug nuts.

2. Lower the vehicle using the jack until it is seated on the ground, but not bearing the full weight yet.

3. Tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern using a socket wrench.

4. Lower the vehicle completely and remove the jack stands.

5. Tighten the lug nuts one more time to ensure they are secure.

Step 7: Test the Brakes:

1. Start the vehicle and press the brake pedal several times to ensure that the brakes are operating smoothly and evenly.

2. Take your vehicle for a test drive and check that the brakes are working effectively without any unusual noises or vibrations.

Note: Please refer to your vehicle's service manual for specific instructions related to your model and year. Brake work is critical to your safety, so if you're not confident in your mechanical abilities, it's best to have the brakes replaced by a qualified mechanic.
