Have a leaky windshield? Here’s what to do!

Most drivers noticed the accumulation of moisture in their vehicle or even smelled that nasty, musty, damp odor. Are you one of them?

If you even experienced some of these situations, it’s most likely that you have a leak somewhere in your car. Aside from the moisture accumulation and nasty odor, leaks can also lead to wet carpet or floor mats (it’s wet but you don’t know how it got that wet), rust inside your car and often foggy windows.

Testing your windshield for leaks

Leaky windshields usually lead to condensation in the car or even water inside your vehicle. It’s highly unlikely that the excess moisture got inside through other means, but there’s no harm in checking your windshield. So how to determine if you have a leaky windshield?

1. Pour soapy water on your windshield (on the outside). Make sure that you cover all the edges and corners
2. Use an air compressor and from the inside of your car, blow the air along the trim of your windshield. If you see bubbles forming outside of your car…well there you have it. You have a leaky windshield.
3. Alternatively, you can go to an automatic carwash or ask one of your friends to pour water on your windshield. If you notice any drops of water inside your car…well it’s time for a windshield replacement.

The cause of leaky windshields

Now that you established that you have a leaky windshield, it’s time to understand what are the possible causes of this. In most cases, leaks occur because of the deterioration of the rubber around your windshield. This is normal.

Another possible reason is that your windshield was installed incorrectly. Aside from the leaky windshield, there are other signs of incorrect windshield installation:

• Hearing ‘whooshing’ sound while driving at higher speeds
• The person that installed your windshield was working without gloves
• Unusual rattling or vibrating sound
• Windshields should be flushed with the frame of your car. If it’s not, it’s most likely incorrectly installed
• Remains of old adhesive in the windshield frame

If you think that you have a leaky windshield, and you noticed some of the signs above, the most likely culprit is incorrect installation. That is if you have replaced your windshield recently. However, if your current windshield is the one you had for years but you still notice water inside your car, then it’s probably the rubber seal around your windshield.

What to do in case of leaking windshields?

When you conducted all the tests and you’re pretty sure that your windshield is leaking, the first thing you must do is head to a trusted auto glass repair shop. Trying to fix the leak with DIY tools might be effective, but for how long? It’s best to leave this to the professionals.
