Whether you have an electric, hybrid, or traditional gas-powered vehicle, they all need to be serviced on a regular basis. The question is, are there different maintenance requirements for each kind of vehicle, and if so, how do they differ? What about the cost? For example, does it cost a lot more for hybrid repairs than for repairs on an electric or gasoline vehicle? The common belief is that hybrid service is more specialized, and therefore much more expensive than a gasoline-powered vehicle. This is not always the case.
So what does hybrid service include? Surprisingly, the services needed on a hybrid vehicle are basically the same as for traditional gas-powered vehicles. The only difference is that there is a battery air filter in many hybrid vehicles that require maintenance. Some people are not aware that because the hybrid’s engine also runs on gasoline, it requires regular oil changes the same as a gas-powered vehicle. Brake service, tire alignment, belt replacements, etc. all will be about the same as for gasoline vehicles.
A couple of differences that could cost more is coolant changes (it is more labor-intensive), and of course, replacing a hybrid battery. However, most current hybrid vehicles come with an eight-year, 80,000-mile warranty so that if the battery needs to be replaced before that time frame, it would be 100% covered by the manufacturer.
The initial cost is the biggest disadvantage of purchasing a hybrid vehicle, although it is offset somewhat by the amount of money saved on fuel, especially if one drives a lot of miles. Also, for people who are serious about not harming the environment, a hybrid vehicle has significantly fewer toxic fumes emitted into the atmosphere, as well as fewer trips to the pump!
