Tools Needed:
-Wrench
-Ratchet
-Socket set
-Breaker bar (if needed)
Procedure:
1. Open the Hood:
-Pull the release lever inside your vehicle to open the hood.
-Locate and lift the hood prop to keep it open.
2. Locate the Serpentine Belt:
-The serpentine belt is usually positioned on the front of the engine.
-It wraps around several pulleys, including the crankshaft, alternator, water pump, and power steering pump.
3. Loosen the Tensioner:
-Find the tensioner pulley, which is usually located near the top of the engine.
-Using a wrench or a socket, turn the tensioner counterclockwise to release tension on the belt.
4. Remove the Serpentine Belt:
-Once the tension is released, you can slip the belt off the pulleys one by one.
-Keep track of the routing of the belt so that you can install the new one correctly.
5. Inspect the Belt:
-Check the old belt for any signs of damage, such as cracks or fraying.
-Replace it if necessary.
6. Install the New Belt:
-Position the new belt around the pulleys in the same routing as the old one.
-Apply some pressure on the belt to ensure that it seats properly on the pulleys.
-Tighten the tensioner pulley until the belt is snug but not too tight.
-Avoid over-tightening, as this can cause premature belt failure.
7. Double Check:
-Ensure that the belt is properly aligned on all the pulleys.
-Verify that the tension is appropriate.
8. Close the Hood:
-Lower the hood and latch it properly to complete the replacement.
Tips:
-If the tensioner pulley is difficult to turn, you can use a breaker bar to apply additional leverage.
-Refer to your vehicle's owner's manual for specific instructions related to your model.
-Some Oldsmobile models may have additional components or variations in the belt routing, so double check the specific details for your vehicle.
